Hello! Today I will be talking about what I think was one of the best projects of 2019: 1000 gecs by 100 gecs. This album is 23 minutes worth of pure fun and a mixture of experimental and abrasive music. This duo, composed of Dylan Brady and Laura Les, is a hit-or-miss for listeners. They are definitely a hit for me; I enjoy the chipmunk vocals, hard drops, and witty lyrics. The rise of the hyperpop scene has been one of my favorite things to witness and listen to. Laura and Dylan have remixed, collaborated, and produced songs with their peers from Charli XCX to Hannah Diamond to Rico Nasty. They were even scheduled to perform this month at Coachella before its postponement. 100 gecs show they are unafraid to experiment with their jarring outros and their in-your-face attitude in their songs. Some highlights off 1000 gecs are “money machine,” the song that inspired many Twitter memes with its sassy intro and overall badass sound, “ringtone,” the cute song about having a customized ringtone for your lover, and “xXX_i_wud_nvrstøp_ÜXXx,” the eurodance track that not only has a stylized title reminiscent of early Myspace days but also has a ready-to-rave sound. Overall, this project is fun, great, and shows us a duo who is unafraid to take their sound to the extreme.
